Tulsa OK Professional Cockroach Pest Control
Out of all household pests, the cockroach is rated one of the worst. These prolific breeders are continuously building their numbers. Scientists have successfully identified around 4,000 cockroach species, 30 of which have been connected to home infiltration and 5 in Oklahoma. One thing is for sure, cockroach infiltration is no joke. Just ask the millions of victims across the globe how they feel about the cockroach species. Not one will admit to being a satisfied cockroach victim.
Fortunately, not all cockroach species have been linked to home infiltration. These species spend most of their time serving the ecosystem. What exactly do these species of cockroaches do to help the environment? Well, they ingest ground floor debris like leaves and plants. The cockroach abdomen has microbes that are capable of breaking down rotting plant material, unlike most other living creatures.
What Are The Most Commonly Reported Cockroach Sightings In Tulsa Oklahoma?
There are two primary cockroach species living in Tulsa. These species include the American cockroach and German cockroach. How to differentiate between the two cockroach species? Find out by reading the content provided in the article below.
German Cockroach Species
The adult grows up to 5/8 of an inch in length. The body varies between tan and light brown. The insect’s most distinguishable feature is its “racing stripes” located on the head posterior (back of the head). There are two stripes that run laterally from the top of the posterior head to the top of the wings. While these are distinguishable physical characteristics, for them to be visible to the naked eye, you must be within a few inches of the cockroach,
The German female cockroach generates up to 5 egg casings with approximately 40 eggs in her lifetime. The insect is notorious for infiltrating residential and commercial settings. They can be found hiding in kitchen cabinets, drawers, garbage bins, underneath sinks and appliances, and inside electrical devices, such as clock radios, stereos, and computers.
While having a full set of wings, the German cockroach does not have flying capabilities.
American Cockroach Species
The adult grows up to 2 inches in length, slightly longer than the German cockroach. The body ranges between light brown and reddish/brown, with a single racing stripe on the posterior head, running down to the top of the wings.
The insect lives slightly longer than most other cockroach species. The lifespan in controlled environments is about 3 years. Reaching maturity for these insects can take anywhere from 6 to 24 months. Once the insects reach maturity, they can live another 12 months in controlled environments.
The American cockroach infiltrates public sewage systems or other structures that are dark, damp, and warm.
Other Cockroach Species Found In Oklahoma
The less common cockroach sighting involves the smokey brown, brown-branded, oriental, Mediterranean spotted, and Pennsylvania wood.
Pennsylvania Wood Cockroach Species
Consists of both genders, with the female being slightly smaller, measuring in at about ¾ of an inch in length. The male grows up to 1 inch in length, with slightly longer wings. While not considered a household pest, the Pennsylvania wood cockroach will infiltrate residential and commercial settings, but only by accident.
The male will into outdoor lighting at night. In the natural habitat, the Pennsylvania wood cockroach can be found underneath piles of firewood, near gutters with stagnant water, and in rotting wood siding.
Spotted Mediterranean Cockroach Species
One of the smallest cockroach species, the spotted Mediterranean measures at one-third of an inch in length. The body ranges between tan and light brown with black speckles scattered about.
The spotted Mediterranean cockroach was identified in the 1900s. Since then, the insect continues to expand into new territories with the help of shipping containers. In the natural habitat, the cockroach can be found in gardens and shrubs. The insect utilizes its wings to fly every evening toward porch lighting.
Oriental Cockroach Species
The adult grows up to 1-1/4 inches in length. The body varies between black and dark brown in color. The male is the only gender that grows wings that are nearly as long as the body. The diet consists of household waste, fecal matter, and other rotting organic material.
The cockroach can be found living in public sewage systems and vacant, deteriorating buildings.
Smokey Brown Cockroach Species
The adult grew up to 1.5 inches in length, with a reddish/brown body. The insect is more commonly found living in the Southern United States. But, they have reportedly been sighted in Oklahoma. Unlike the Oriental cockroach species, the smokey brown cockroach grows a full set of wings.
Surinam Cockroach Species
The adult grows up to ¾ inches long, with a light to dark brown body and solid black head plate. The cockroach is more commonly found in warm climates. They can be found living in greenhouses and other areas where plants are stored. The species is limited to only one gender (female). Unlike other cockroach species, the Surinam female carries her eggs internally until giving live birth.
Brown-Branded Cockroach Species
The adult grew up to 0.5 inches long, with a tan to the light brown body. The insect shares many of the same features as the German cockroach. The main difference between the two is the markings on the posterior head. German cockroaches have two racing stripes while the brown-branded cockroach has a single racing stripe that is dark in color.
Why Is My Tulsa Home Infested With Cockroaches?
Small crevices and large openings near utility lines are utilized as cockroach entry points into residential and commercial settings. Cockroaches generally have two things in mind when it comes to indoor infiltration. These include food and shelter. However, some cockroach species accidentally infiltrate buildings, with no real purpose in mind.
Do Cockroaches Carry Diseases?
Yes, cockroaches do transmit disease through fecal material and body contaminates. Cockroach-borne diseases include typhoid fever, dysentery, leprosy, plague, giardia, cholera, salmonella, Shigella, E. coli, and listeriosis.
Studies also show cockroach infestations may exacerbate asthma and COPD. The insect can be found living in household waste and areas where food is prepared and served.
What Is The Best Cockroach Pest Control Strategy?
Cockroaches colonize, making them even more difficult to fully exterminate. The main colony divides, with some infiltrating homes while the rest remain outdoors in their natural habitat. The cockroaches responsible for infiltrating homes are referred to as a “satellite” colony. The solution is professional pest control, which combines visual inspections with adhesive cockroach traps, fumigation, and industrial-strength pesticides if necessary.
